"Farewell, Opportunity, and Well Done."

La Nasa si è arresa: dopo oltre 200 giorni e 1000 tentativi di comunicazione, ha dichiarato conclusa la missione del rover Opportunity. Lo scorso giugno il rover era stato investito da una fortissima tempesta di sabbia, che, oscurando la luce del Sole, ha impedito che le batterie si ricaricassero, e ne ha causato l'ibernazione; a settembre, quando la tempesta è scemata, i tecnici speravano che Opportunity si risvegliasse, e hanno incominciato ad inviargli dei segnali a cui avrebbe dovuto rispondere. Ma, finora, niente. Ecco perché il Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), dopo un ultimo tentativo martedì scorso, ha deciso di terminare la missione...
Doveva durare 90 giorni, è durata 15 anni... "Arrivederci, Opportunity, e ben fatto."

Nasa surrendered: after more than 200 days and 1000 attempts at communication, the mission of the rover Opportunity came to an end. Last June, the rover had been hit by a very strong sandstorm, which, obscuring the light from the sun, prevented the batteries from recharging, and caused its hibernation; in September, when the storm waned, the technicians hoped that Opportunity would wake up, and they began to send signals that it would have to answer.
