A Network of Seismographs

Esiste una rete di fibre ottiche deposte sotto gli oceani che è molto fitta ed articolata.
Non ci sono dati relativi all'attività tellurica sul fondo degli oceani, perché è estremamente costoso posizionarvi e mantenervi sismografi.
Perché non mettere insieme le due cose e sfruttare la rete esistente per recuperare prezioni dati sull'attività della crosta terrestre anche sul fondo dei mari? È quello che sta sperimentando l'università di Berkeley, sfruttando il fatto che le fibre ottiche trasmettono dati attraverso la luce, e che piccoli movimenti fanno eseguire piccole distorsioni alla luce... quindi i dati ci sono, si tratta solo di raccoglierli ed analizzarli... se il sistema, per ora sperimentale, si dimostrerà funzionante!

There is a network of optical fibres laid under the oceans that is very dense and articulated.
There are no data on the telluric activity at the bottom of the oceans because it is extremely expensive to position and maintain seismographs there.
Why not put the two together and exploit the existing network to recover data on the activity of the earth's crust even at the bottom of the seas? That's what the University of Berkeley is experimenting right now, taking advantage of the fact that optical fibres transmit data through light, and that small movements make small distortions in the light... so the data is there, it is just a matter of collecting and analyzing them... if the system, experimental for the moment, will prove to be working!
