Riasfaltare una strada ha un costo, e anche molto alto... bisogna rimuovere lo strato di asfalto superficiale, portarlo allo smaltimento, portare in loco il nuovo materiale e depositarlo nuovamente - occorrono 42 camion per il materiale di scarto ed altrettanti per quello nuovo per ogni miglio (circa 1,6 km) di strada. Ma ora a Los Angeles la ditta TechniSoil Industrial sta sperimentando un nuovo sistema che consiste nel rimuovere lo strato superficiale, sminuzzarlo in loco, mescolarlo con plastica fusa e ridepositarlo immediatamente; la plastica aggiunta garantisce la compattezza del materiale ed anzi ne aumenta la vita dalle 8 alle 13 volte... Risultato? Niente 84 camion, processo più rapido, strada con una maggior durata e costo inferiore...
