I reticoli metallorganici (metal-organic framework - MOF) sono materiali cristallini costituiti da ioni metallici coordinati a leganti organici rigidi in modo da formare strutture mono-, bi- o tridimensionali con porosità molto elevata.
Un gruppo di ricercatori ha trovato un modo di utilizzare questi materiali per produrre acqua dall'aria... del deserto. Al momento si riesce a produrre 1,3 litri di acqua per kg di materiale al giorno, ma si pensa che con qualche piccola modifica si possa arrivare a 8 litri per kg al giorno in poco tempo.
Il sistema è completato da una ventola e un elemento riscaldante, alimentati dall'energia prodotta da un pannello solare - nel deserto!
