Al centro della galassia GSN 069, a 250 milioni di anni luce dalla Terra, c'è un buco nero supermassivo, con una massa pari a circa 400.000 soli.
Questo buco nero ha un comportamento strano: ogni nove ore circa presenta una forte emissione di raggi X, come se ad intervalli regolari inglobasse una grande quantità di materiale (pari all'incirca a quattro lune) in maniera discontinua.
Questi getti di raggi X sono circa 20 volte più luminosi delle emissioni nei periodi di quiete, e un simile comportamento non è mai stato osservato prima...
Tre pasti al giorno per il buco nero!
At the centre of the GSN 069 galaxy, 250 million light-years from Earth, there is a supermassive black hole, with a mass of around 400,000 suns.
This black hole has a strange behaviour: every nine hours or so it shows a strong X-ray burst as if at regular intervals it incorporates a large quantity of material (roughly equal to four moons) in a discontinuous manner.
These X-ray jets are about 20 times brighter than emissions in quiet periods, and such behaviour has never been observed before...
