The icebreaker Polarstern is about to leave for a 20-month mission: the crew, made up of scientists, is planning to let the ship be trapped by the ice of the Arctic and drift with it for this time, to study the rapidly changing Arctic's physical, geochemical, and biological systems, from the start of sea-ice growth in the fall through its breakup the following summer...
