A Solar Sail

LightSail 2 è una vela solare che sarà messa in orbita in questi giorni tramite il razzo Falcon Heavy di SpaceX. Chiusa ha le dimensioni di una scatola di scarpe, ma una volta aperta avrà un'area di circa 25 m² e uno spessore minore di quello di un capello umano.
LightSail 2 servirà a sperimentare il movimento dovuto ai fotoni, che, pur non avendo massa, presentano una quantità di moto (anche se molto piccola, 9 micronewton per m²) in grado di spostare oggetti molto leggeri. Se l'esperimento avrà successo, si potrà pensare a viaggi interstellari con oggetti estremamente leggeri e con una superficie molto grande, spinti da laser molto potenti piazzati sulla Luna. Meta? Per iniziare Alfa Centauri...

LightSail 2 is a solar sail that will be placed into orbit these days through SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket. Closed it is the size of a shoe box, but once opened it will have an area of about 25 m² and a thickness of less than a human hair.
LightSail 2 will be used to test the movement generated by photons, which, although not having mass, have a momentum (although very small, 9 micronewton per m²) capable of moving very light objects.
