Qualche settimana fa la rivista Nature ha pubblicato un articolo di un gruppo dell'università di Cambridge, che descrive la storia di un individua infettato da HIV a cui è stato trapiantato il midollo spinale di un donatore con una particolare mutazione genetica che lo rende resistente al virus.
Il paziente ha smesso di prendere i farmaci antiretrovirali (la cura standard per HIV) e, dopo 18 mesi, non mostra alcun segno del virus... È il secondo paziente a subire questo tipo di operazione (il primo era stato 10 anni fa) e a mostrare segni di guarigione dall'AIDS. Che sia questa la strada?
A few weeks ago the magazine Nature pubblished an article by a group from the University of Cambridge, which describes the story of an HIV-infected individual who was transplanted a donor's spinal cord with a particular genetic mutation that makes it resistant to the virus.
The patient stopped taking antiretroviral drugs (the standard treatment for HIV) and, after 18 months, shows no signs of the virus... He is the second patient to undergo this type of operation (the first was 10 years ago) and to show signs of healing from AIDS. Is this the way?
