La degenerazione dei dischi intervertebrali - una sorta di cuscinetti posti tra due vertebre per permetterne il movimento - causa dolore e difficoltà di movimento. Finora non era possibile sostituirli per cui, quando si rovinavane, bisognava ricorrere a pratiche che immobilizzassero le due vertebre interessate, impedendone di fatto il movimento.
Ora un gruppo di ricercatori è riuscito a produrre in laboratorio dei dischi, utilizzando un gel polimerico in cui sono state iniettate cellule staminali di mucca: questi dischi, impiantati in capre, si sono per ora dimostrati funzionali come quelli naturali, anche se c'è ancora molta strada da fare...
The degeneration of the intervertebral discs - a sort of small cushions placed between two vertebrae to allow movement - causes pain and difficulty in movement. So far it was not possible to replace them, so when they were ruined, it was necessary to resort to practices that would immobilize the two concerned vertebrae, effectively preventing them from moving.
Now a group of researchers has been able to produce discs in the laboratory, using a polymeric gel in which cow's stem cells have been injected: these discs, implanted in goats, have for now proved functional like natural ones, even if there is still a long way to go...
