Mercurio, il pianeta più piccolo del sistema solare, ed il più vicino al Sole, si sta contraendo... secondo i dati forniti da Mariner prima, e da Messenger poi - le due sonde spaziali che hanno fornito dati sul pianeta - Mercurio è conposto da uno strato continuo e sottile di roccia, che circonda il cuore del pianeta di ferro fuso. Dal momento della creazione del Sistema Solare, circa 4,5 miliardi di anni fa, il nucleo è andato lentamente raffreddandosi, e questo ha comportato una riduzione del volume. Il raggio si è quindi ridotto tra i 14 e i 20 km e questo ha causato una corrugazione della superficie, dando origine migliaia di scarpate e pareti scoscese lungo tutto il pianeta...
