Il telescopio spaziale Spitzer, inizialmente lanciato per una missione della durata di 2,5 anni, è ancora in funzione dopo 15 anni... e si prevede che potrà operare per ancora 1 anno almeno!
Durante la sua vita, Spitzer ha contribuito a molte scoperte: l'anello più esterno di Saturno, la serie di esopianeti che orbita nel sistema Trappist 1 e alcune delle galassie più distanti che si conoscono: poste a 13,4 miliardi di anni luce dalla Terra, si pensa che si siano formate solamente 400 milioni di anni dopo il big bang...
Il telescopio opera nell'infrarosso ed è parte del sistema chiamato "The Great Observatories" ( i Grandi Osservatori) che comprende anche Hubble (visibile e ultravioletto), Chandra (raggi X) e CGRO (raggi gamma).

The telescope operates in the infrared and is part of the system called "The Great Observatories" which also includes Hubble (visible and ultraviolet), Chandra (X-ray) and CGRO (gamma rays).
