Un asteroide individuato lo scorso anno, 2017 YE5, è in realtà formato da due corpi che orbitano uno intorno all'altro: questa la scoperta effettuata dall'osservatorio di Arecibo in Portorico, insieme al Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) della NASA in California e al Green Bank Observatory (GBO) in West Virginia.
I due corpi hanno un diametro di circa 900 metri ciascuno e ruotano uno intorno all'altro in circa 20 ore. 2017 YE5 è solamente il quarto asteroide binario mai identificato in cui i due oggetti hanno misure simili: in genere uno è molto più grande dell'altro...
An asteroid identified last year, 2017 YE5, is actually made up of two bodies orbiting one around the other: this is the discovery made by the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, together with the NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar (GSSR) in California and the Green Bank Observatory (GBO) in West Virginia.
The two bodies have a diameter of about 900 meters each and rotate around one another in about 20 hours. 2017 YE5 is only the fourth ever identified binary asteroid in which the two objects have similar measures: generally one is much larger than the other...
