A Lonely Neutron Star

Gli scienziati della NASA hanno scoperto, per la prima volta, una stella a neutroni molto particolare fuori dalla Via Lattea.
Questa stella infatti ha contemporaneamente un basso campo magnetico e nessuna compagna: al momento se ne conoscono solo una decina nella nostra galassia, e questa è la prima identificata al di fuori.
Questo residuo di supernova - E0102 - si trova nella Piccola Nube di Magellano, a circa 200.000 anni luce da noi e, nota da una decina di anni, è stata caratterizzata recentemente grazie a nuove osservazioni effettuate con l'Osservatorio a raggi X Chandra della NASA e il Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Cile, dell'European Southern Observatory...

NASA scientists discovered, for the first time, a very particular neutron star out of the Milky Way.
In fact, this star has both a low magnetic field and no stellar companion: at the moment only a dozen of them are known in our galaxy, and this is the first one identified outside.
These supernova remains - E0102 - are found in the Small Magellanic Cloud, about 200,000 light years from us and, known for about ten years, was recently characterized thanks to new observations made with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile...
