La NASA sta programmando di mandare per la prima volta nello spazio e su un altro pianeta una macchina volante: per la precisione un piccolo elicottero, chie viaggerà insieme al rover Mars 2020. L'atmosfera su Marte è molto più rarefatta di quella della Terra, circa un centesimo, per cui sostiene meno le macchine volanti: bisogna compensare creando un elicottero molto leggero e insieme di grande potenza; inoltre, considerando la distanza, non è possibile comandare l'elicottero dalla Terra, che quindi svolgerà missioni programmate, dalla prima - alzarsi fino a 3 metri e rimanere stabile per 30 secondi - alla quinta, in cui si allontanerà di alcune centinaia di metri...
Se la missione avrà successo, aprirà la strada anche ai mezzi volanti su altri pianeti!
