The Penguin and the Egg

Cosa succede quando due galassie si incontrano?
Questa immagine, generata dalla combinazione di fotografie scattate da Hubble e Spitzer, mostra l'ammasso Arp 142, in cui due galassie stanno interagendo e assumono una forma che ricorda un pinguino con l'uovo.
Il pinguino è la galassia NGC 2336, originariamente una galassia a spirale, la cui forma è stata modificata e distorta dalla forza gravitazionale della sua vicina.
L'uovo è la galassia NGC 2937, che non sembra essere modificata dall'incontro, forse perché più compatta e formata da stelle più vecchie.
Un giorno si fonderanno per dare origine ad un nuovo corpo celeste...

What happens when two galaxies meet?
This image, generated by the combination of photographs taken by Hubble and Spitzer, shows the cluster Arp 142, in which two galaxies are interacting and show a shape that resembles a penguin with an egg.
The penguin is the galaxy NGC 2336, originally a spiral galaxy, whose shape has now been twisted and distorted as it responds to the gravitational tugs of its neighbour.
The egg is the galaxy NGC 2937, which does not seem to be modified by the encounter, perhaps because more compact and formed by older stars.
One day they will merge to give rise to a new celestial body...
