Back After 13 Years

Dopo 13 anni di silenzio, la sonda spaziale IMAGE ha inviato un segnale alla Terra!
La sonda, nata per studiare la magnetosfera terrestre, era stata lanciata nel marzo del 2000, e aveva inviato molti dati interessanti sull'interazione tra magnetosfera e particelle portate dal vento solare.
Poi, d'improvviso, nel dicembre 2005 aveva smesso di comunicare; dopo un paio d'anni la sonda era stata dichiarata "morta" e si pensava che fosse stata distrutta dallo scontro con qualche piccolo meteorite o a causa dei raggi cosmici... fino a quando, il mese scorso, non è arrivato il nuovo segnale.
Cosa succederà ora? Ancora non si sa, gli scienziati della NASA stanno verificando varie possiblità...

After 13 years of silence, the spacecraft IMAGE sent a signal to the Earth!
The probe, created to study the Earth's magnetosphere, was launched in March 2000 and sent to Earth many interesting data on the interaction between the magnetosphere and particles carried by the solar wind.
Then, suddenly, in December 2005 it stopped communicating; after a couple of years the probe had been declared "dead" and it was thought that it had been destroyed by the collision with some small meteorite or because of the cosmic rays... until when, last month, the new signal did arrive.
What will happen now? Still not known, NASA scientists are checking various possibilities...
