Il 17 agosto un'onda gravitazionale è stata registrata dal LIGO: il riverbero dello scontro di due stelle a neutroni.
Le stelle a neutroni sono stelle estremamente dense, e si suppone che le loro collisioni abbiano generato molti elementi pesanti, compresi i metalli prezioni, ma non se ne'ra mai osservata una.

Una curiosità: in "The Astrophysical Journal Letters" è stato pubblicato un articolo con 4.500 autori - un terzo di tutti gli astronomi professionisti nel mondo - di 910 istituzioni... un numero intero solo per elencarli tutti! 😃

Neutron stars are extremely dense stars, and their collisions are supposed to have generated many heavy elements, including precious metals, but no one has ever been observed.
