Il telescopio spaziale Hubble ha fotografato la cometa C/2017 K2, la cometa più distante mai individuata finora nel sistema solare: si trova a 2,4 miliardi di chilometri dal Sole.
La cometa, che proviene dalla nube di Oort, mostra già una chioma con un diametro di 130.000 km, non formata dall'evaporazione del ghiaccio - è ancora troppo lontana - ma probabilmente dalla sublimazione di sostanze come ossigeno, azoto, monossido e biossido di carbonio, presenti sulla superficie.
La coda non è ancora presente, quindi per la prima volta gli scienziati potranno studiarne la formazione!
Hubble space telescope photographed the C/2017 K2 comet, the farthest comet ever found in the solar system so far: it is 1.5 billion miles from the Sun.
The comet, which originates from the Oort Cloud, already shows an 80,000-miles-wide coma, not produced by the evaporation of water ice - it is still too far - but probably by the sublimation of substances such as oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, present on the surface.
The tail is not yet present, so for the first time, scientists will be able to study its formation!
