La FDA americana sta per approvare il primo trattamento di terapia genica per i pazienti affetti da leucemia linfoblastica acuta delle cellule B. Ai pazienti si prelevano i linfociti T, che vengono spediti ad un laboratorio Novartis per essere modificati geneticamente e rispediti al centro di trattamento per essere re-iniettati.
Dei 63 pazienti che hanno ricevuto il trattamento, un incredibile 82,5% è andato in remissione: una percentuale molto alta.
Questo potrebbe essere il primo di una nuova era di farmaci antitumorali: speriamo bene!
The American FDA is about to approve the first ever gene therapy treatment for patients suffering from B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The patients should have their T-cells removed, shipped to a Novartis plant to be genetically modified and shipped back to the treatment centre to be re-injected.
Of the 63 patients who received the treatment, an astonishing 82.5% went into remission: a very high rate.
This could be the first of a new era of anticancer drugs: let's hope so!
