Ci sono voluti 20 anni per ottenere la prima sequenza completa del genoma umano ed oggi, 14 anni dopo, la sequenza del genoma è una pratica standard, che costa circa 1000 dollari, e centinaia di altre specie sono state sequenziate.
Altro paio di maniche è sintetizzare lunghe catene di DNA... dopo un meeting a porte chiuse dello scorso anno, qualche giorno fa c'è stato un nuovo incontro, questa volta più aperto, al New York Genome Center. L'ipotesi di costruire un intero genoma eucariotico in vitro è ancora tecnicamente non sostenibile, ed anche se lo fosse, sarebbe non plausibile dal punto di vista economico.
Tuttavia gli scienziati pensano che nei prossimi venti anni il costo scenderà sotto i 100.000 dollari, ancora troppo alto per un utilizzo massiccio ma sicuramente accettabile per sperimentare in laboratorio: pensiamo a cellule con gli oncogeni disattivati, o resistenti a virus, o organi per trapianti che non stimolino la risposta immunitaria... insomma, tante cose positive.
Ma c'è sempre anche il rovescio della medaglia...
