In realtà i buchi neri non sono cattivi... non "mangiano" tutto ciò che capita loro a tiro.
La maggior parte dei buchi neri è in equilibrio con ciò che gli sta vicino, che può quindi orbitargli intorno per lunghi periodi senza essere inghiottito.
Quando però questo equilibrio si rompe, ecco che il buco nero si scatena, e inghiotte tutto ciò che gli si avvicina... questo è quanto succede, per esempio, quando due galassie si scontrano: il materiale stellare viene spinto verso i due buchi neri nei rispettivi centri, supera l'orizzonte degli eventi e viene ingoiato... ed è il momento in cui i buchi neri "mangiano" di più, fino a che si fondono e poi la situazione si stabilizza nuovamente...

In reality, the black holes are not bad... they do not "eat" everything that comes within range.
Most black holes are in balance with what is close to them, which can then orbit around for long periods without being swallowed.
When this equilibrium breaks down, however, then the black hole is unleashed, and swallows everything that is approaching it... this is what happens, for example, when two galaxies collide: starry material is pushed toward the two black holes sitting in their centers, goes beyond the horizon of events and gets swallowed... and this is the time when black holes "eat" more, until they merge and then the situation stabilizes again...
