Una cometa che gioca a nascondino... scoperta nel 1858 da Tuttle, la cometa venne osservata nuovamente nel 1907 da Giocobini, ma non riconosciuta come la stessa. Poi la cometa, attesa nel 1928 e nel 1934, non fu avvistata e fu data per dispersa... per ricomparire nel 1951 ed essere riconosciuta da Kresák. Da qui i tre nomi.
41P è una cometa gioviale, ed oggi si sa che ha un periodo di 5,4 anni, ma non è visibile dalla Terra in ogni passaggio. Quest'anno sarà visibile con un binocolo o un piccolo telescopio, e forse anche a occhio nudo, in questi giorni, quando sarà nel suo punto più vicino alla Terra da circa un secolo...
A comet playing hide and seek... discovered in 1858 by Tuttle, the comet was observed again in 1907 by Giocobini, but not recognised as the same. Then the comet, expected in 1928 and 1934, was not spotted and was reported missing... only to reappear in 1951 and be recognised by Kresák. That's why it's got three names.
41P is a member of the Jupiter family of comets, and now we know that it has a period of 5.4 years but is not visible from Earth at every transit. This year it will be visible in these days with binoculars or a small telescope, and perhaps even with the naked eye, as it is at its closest approach to Earth since a century...
