Un gruppo di ricercatori, utilizzando un network di 8 osservatori sparsi per il pianete - definito Event Horizon Telescope array, ha creato un telescopio virtuale grande come il pianeta stesso.
Lo scopo? Fotografare un buco nero... anzi due, il buco nero supermassivo al centro della nostra galassia, ed un'altro ancora più grande, al centro della galassia M87.
Hanno raccolto dati per 5 giorni 24 ore su 24, senza mai fermarsi e tenendo le dita incrociate perché, se avesse piovuto anche solo in una postazione, avrebbero dovuto buttare via tutto e ricominciare da capo...
Ora dovranno attendere almeno un mese perché i dati vengano analizzati; per poi sperare di vedere "il sorriso del buco nero"!
A group of researchers, using a network of eight observatories around the planet - called Event Horizon Telescope Array, created a virtual telescope as big as the planet itself.
The purpose? Photographing a black hole... or rather two, the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, and another, even bigger, the centre of the M87 galaxy.
They collected data for 5 days 24/7, never stopping and keeping the fingers crossed because, if it had rained even only in one location, all their work would have become garbage and they would have had to start over ...
Now, they will have to wait at least a month while the data is analysed; then they hope to see "the smile of the black hole"!
