Immaginate un asteroide composto quasi interamente di metallo - ferro, nickel, oro - invece che di rocce e ghiaccio. Immaginate che questo asteroide abbia un valore 100.000 volte più alto del prodotto interno lordo di tutto il mondo...
Avete immaginato Psyche, un asteroide realmente esistente e scoperto nel 1852 da Annibale de Gasparis, direttore dell’osservatorio astronomico di Capodimonte; e che sarà la destinazione di una missione della NASA che partirà nel 2023 e raggiungerà l'oggetto celeste nel 2030. Non per portarlo a Terra, ma per studiarlo: infatti si pensa che possa essere il residuo di un antico pianeta che è stato scavato da eventi naturali fino a mettere allo scoperto il suo nucleo, eliminando tutta la parte di roccia che generalmente costituisce il guscio più esterno di un pianeta.
Se poi si riuscisse a recuperarne anche solo un pezzetto...
