La nostra galassia, la Via Lattea, si muove ad una velocità di 50 km/sec verso "qualcosa". Un gruppo di astronomi ha postulato che esista un supercluster (un insieme di centinaia di galassie) che attira la Via Lattea e più di cinquanta galassie circostanti verso un punto dello spazio; il supercluster sarebbe invisibile a causa dei gas, della polvere e delle stelle della nostra galassia, che ne hanno finora impedito l'osservazione.
Tuttavia questo supercluster è stato confermato osservando lo spostamento verso il rosso di 4500 galassie nella costellazione Vela (da cui supercluster Vela), e ci arriveremo tra 5 bilioni di anni...
