La microscopia elettronica è in grado di fornire moltissimi particolari dei campioni analizzati e di ingrandirli fino a 10 milioni di volte, ma ha un difetto: è in bianco e nero... almeno finora.
Infatti un gruppo di ricercatori ha trovato il modo di utilizzare degli elementi del gruppo dei Lantanidi per generare dei colori, anche se artificiali. Al momento si possono generare tre colori, e già questo ha permesso di ottenere immagini con dettagli mai visti così chiaramente finora; in futuro si potrebbe arrivare a sei-sette, con risultati che forse non riusciamo nemmeno ad immaginare...
