I genetisti studiano i geni, ma poi, per capire bene come funzionano, e dove, devono trovare in quali cellule sono espressi; e qui comincia l'avventura.
Sì, perché ciò che si è fatto finora, prendere un pezzetto di tessuto, farne crescere le cellule in vitro e testarlo per l'espressione di un particolare gene, si sta rivelando niente più di un'analisi di una popolazione mista. Infatti si sta scoprendo che cellule che si pensavano uguali, nel medesimo tessuto, in realtà compongono più sottotipi, con espressioni geniche differenti... questo si ottiene analizzando il DNA di singole cellule e studiandone l'espressione.
Nasce quindi l'idea, e la necessità, di costruire un atlante dell'espressione cellulare nel corpo; fatica improba e a lungo, molto lungo, termine, ma necessaria...

So the idea was born, and the need, to build an atlas of cellular expression in the body; task exhausting and on a long, very long-term, but necessary...
