Un team di ricercatori ha individuato, in un osso di piede fossile di un ominide, un cancro: usando una tecnica chiamata micro-CT imaging, hanno realizzato delle immagini 2D e 3D dell'interno dell'osso che hanno evidenziato una crescita anormale dei tessuti, tipica dell'osteosarcoma, un cancro che colpisce nell'età giovanile.
Il fossile ha un'età compresa tra 1,6 e 1,8 milioni di anni...
D'altronde, se il cancro è provocato da una mutazione nel DNA, è possibile che fosse presente già nella preistoria, anche se raro perché difficilmente gli uomini vivevano abbastanza da sviluppare la malattia...
