Oxygen on Mars!

Sì, o meglio c'era, e in grosse quantità... questa sembra essere la teoria più plausibile per spiegare il ritrovamento di rocce contenenti ossido di manganese, che si formano solo in presenza di grandi quantità di ossigeno. Infatti gli strumenti del Curiosity hanno rilevato la presenza di questo minerale colpendo la superficie con un raggio laser e registrando i dati di ritorno...
L'ossigeno potrebbe essersi formato grazie a microbi presenti in grande quantità - ciò che è successo per la Terra - oppure, e sembra l'ipotesi più plausibile, dalla ossidazione dell'acqua, quando il pianeta, un tempo ricco d'acqua, l'ha persa a seguito del dissolvimento dell'atmosfera...
