Il Senseable City Lab del MIT, insieme all'Istituto Svizzero di Tecnologia (ETHZ) ed al Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche Italiano (CNR), ha messo a punto un progetto chiamato "Light Traffic" che permetterà, il giorno che i veicoli saranno autonomi e dotati di sensori, di eliminare i semafori, aumentando sensibilmente la velocità media nelle zone oggi congestionate e diminuendo la quantità di gas di scarico dispersa nell'ambiente.
Tutto ciò grazie ad un sistema a slot che assegnerà ad ogni veicolo un "momento" per attraversare l'incrocio, permettendogli di regolare la sua velocità senza fermarsi e creare coda.

The MIT Senseable City Lab, together with the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETHZ) and the Italian National Research Council (CNR), developed a project named "Light Traffic" that will allow, one day when the vehicles will be autonomous and equipped with sensors, the elimination of traffic lights, significantly increasing the average speed in the areas today traffic-jammed and decreasing the amount of exhaust gases dispersed into the environment.
All of this thanks to a slot system that will assign to each vehicle a "moment" to cross the intersection, allowing it to adjust its speed without stopping and creating the queue.
