Gene Therapy vs. ALD

17 pazienti affetti da Adrenoleucodistrofia sono stati trattati con terapia genica. Le loro cellule del sangue, trattate con un virus modificato contenente una copia sana del gene che non funziona nel loro cromosoma X, sono state reinfuse e, dopo quasi due anni, 16 non hanno presentato progressione della malattia.
Considerando che i pazienti affetti da ALD generalmente muoiono prima dei 12 anni, è un risultato eccezionale! Speriamo che venga confermato.

17 patients suffering from Adrenoleukodystrophy  were treated with gene therapy. Their blood cells, treated with a modified virus containing a healthy copy of the gene that does not work in their X chromosome, have been re-infused and, after almost two years, 16 did not show disease progression.
Considering that patients suffering from ALD usually die before the age of 12, it is an outstanding achievement! Hopefully it will be confirmed.
