Sembra che l'invenzione dell'ora legale si debba addirittura a Ben Franklin, il quale, prendendo un po' in giro i Francesi durante la sua permanenza in quale nazione come ambasciatore, si fosse lamentato di venir svegliato, d'estate, alle 6 di mattina con il sole già alto, mentre la sera si dovevano usare le candele dopo l tramonto, con evidente spreco di risorse...
