In natura ci sono moltissimi tipi di occhi: gli animali li usano per molti scopi diversi - e "vedere" significa molte cose differenti.
In genere si distinguono quattro tipi di occhi:
1. semplici fotorecettori in grado di percepire la luce
2. occhi più complessi, in grado anche di capire da quale direzione la luce arriva
3. occhi in grado di fornire un'immagine, per quanto grezza, di ciò che li circonda
4. occhi con una capacità visiva ad alta risoluzione.
È anche incredibile quanta varietà ci sia nel numero di occhi e nella loro posizione...
In nature there are many types of eyes: the animals use them for many different purposes - and "see" means many different things.
Generally one can distinguish four types of eyes:
1. simple photoreceptors only able to perceive light;
2. more complex eyes, also able to tell which direction the light comes from;
3. eyes capable of providing an image, just a raw one, of what surrounds them;
4. eyes with a visual acuity at high resolution.
It is also amazing how much variety there is in the number of eyes and in their position...
