I ricercatori della Johns Hopkins University a Baltimora sono riusciti a far crescere in vitro dei mini-cervelli, riprogrammando cellule epiteliali adulte. La dimensione è di circa 1/3 di millimetro, e sono formati da diversi tipi di neuroni e di cellule di supporto, riproducendo sia la struttura che l'attività di un cervello vero. Anche se non è il primo caso di cellule cerebrali cresciute in vitro, questo è sicuramente il modello più standardizzabile e rapido creato finora, e potrebbe essere molto utile per lo sviluppo di farmaci.
Researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore were able to grow mini-brains in vitro, by reprogramming adult skin cells. The size is about 1/3 of a millimeter, and they are made by different types of neurons and supporting cells, reproducing both the structure and the activity of a real brain. Although this is not the first case of brain cells grown in vitro, this is definitely the most standardized and quickly to create model so far, an it could be very useful for the development of new drugs.
