W2246-0526 è la galassia più luminosa che si conosca, con una luminosità pari a 300 bilioni (milioni di milioni) di soli. Distante 12,4 miliardi di anni luce dalla Terra, può essere individuata solo agli infrarossi perché coperta di gas e polveri che ne oscurano la brillantezza alla luce visibile.
I gas e le polveri sono dovuti ad un buco nero supermassiccio, che sta letteralmente divorando la galassia.
Quindi la più luminosa, ma fino a quando?
W2246-0526 is the brightest known galaxy, with a brightness of 300 trillion (million of millions) Suns. 12.4 billion light years away from Earth, it can be detected only by infrared because it is covered in gas and dust that obscure the brightness of its visible light.
The gases and dust are due to a supermassive black hole, which is literally devouring the galaxy.
So the brightest, but until when?
