Una serie di immagini riprese tra novembre 2013 e aprile 2015 dal GPI (Gemini Planet imager) ci mostra per la prima volta un esopianeta che orbita intorno alla sua stella.
Grazie ad un sistema di mascheramento della luce della stella, chiamato coronagrafia, è possibile seguire i movimenti del pianeta, finché non transita di fronte o dietro la stella.
In questo caso il pianeta ß Pic b è stato seguito per 18 mesi nella sua orbita di circa 22 anni...
A series of images taken between November 2013 and April 2015 by GPI (Gemini Planet imager) shows us for the first time an exoplanet orbiting around its star.
Thanks to a device that blocks the light of the star, called coronagraph, it is possible to follow the planet's movement, as long as it doesn't pass in front of or behind the star.
In this case the planet β Pic b was observed for 18 months during its orbit lasting around 22 years...
