Gli astronomi che disegnano le mappe della Galassia sono un po' come i cartografi del Medio Evo... hanno strumenti limitati e non riescono a vedere troppo lontano. Pensiamo solo alla difficoltà di vedere l'altra estremità della nostra galassia, attraverso nubi di polvere cosmica e un centro - troppo - luminoso...
Così, ogni volta che si aggiunge un nuovo strumento, che ottengono nuovi dati, si affrettano ad aggiornare le mappe perché riflettano le più recenti conoscenze.
L'ultima novità si chiama Esploratore di campo infrarosso grandangolare (più o meno: Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer - WISE) ed ha permesso di individuare più di 400 vivai di stelle, che ci aiutano a disegnare la forma dei bracci della nostra galassia spirale...
Astronomers drawing maps of the Galaxy are somehow like Middle Ages cartographers... they have limited tools and are unable to see too far away. Let's just consider the difficulty of seeing the other end of our Galaxy, through clouds of cosmic dust and a - too - bright center...
So, every time a new tool is available, and new data are obtained, they hurry up to update the maps so that they reflect the most recent knowledge.
The latest innovation's name is Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer - WISE, and it allowed to identify more than 400 star nurseries, that will help us drawing the shape of the arms of our spiral galaxy...
