In un articolo di qualche giorno fa sul Journal of the Royal Society Interface un team di scienziati ipotizza che il rumore sia dovuto alla vibrazione di una serie di cavità all'interno del popcorn stesso, causata da un repentino cambio di pressione quando il vapore si libera a seguito della rottura della parete del chicco.

A question that is gripping everybody since centuries: why a popcorn, when it burst open, produces the typical "pop"? In an article from a few days ago on Journal of the Royal Society Interface a team of scientists hypothesizes that the sound is due to the vibration within a series of cavities inside the popcorn itself, generated by a sudden change in pressure when the water vapor get released as the kernel opens.
A discovery worth the Ig Nobel prize!
