Un'azienda inglese (Oxford Nanopore) ha annunciato che entro la fine dell'anno metterà in vendita uno strumento per la sequenza del DNA delle dimensioni di una chiavetta USB, che costerà circa 900 USD e che potrà essere collegata ad un qualsiasi computer per analizzare la sequenza ottenuta.
Potrà essere utilizzato una sola volta e conterrà i dati di 1 miliardo di basi (circa un terzo di un genome umano).
La stessa ditta commercializza un sequenziatore più grande (e costoso) di cui sta preparando una seconda versione; e sostiene che, usando venti macchine della seconda versione, sarà possibile sequenziare un intero genoma umano in 15 minuti, con un costo di circa 1500 USD. Per confronto, il progetto HGP (Human Genome Project), ci ha messo 10 anni per generare la prima sequenza completa, ad un costo di molti milioni di dollari...
A British Company (Oxford Nanopore) announced that by year end it would begin selling a DNA sequencer the size of a USB memory stick, that will cost 900 USD and that could be connected to any PC to analyse the sequence obtained.
It could be used only once, and will contain data related to 1 billion bases (around one third of a human genome).
The same company sells a bigger (and more expensive) sequencer, and is working on a second generation of it; they claim that using 20 of those machines, it will be possible to sequence a full human genome in 15 minutes at a cost of 1500 USD. As a comparison, it took the HGP (Human Genome Project) 10 years to sequence the first full genome, at a cost of several million dollars...
