Bellissimo articolo sul Milwaukee Sentinel, che ha valso un premio Pulitzer agli autori; la storia di un bambino di 6 anni che da quando ne aveva 2 ha vissuto più tempo in ospedale che fuori, subito più di 100 interventi chirurgici e mangiato cibo solido pochissime volte. Vittima di una malattia sconosciuta, sembrava che non esistesse cura che potesse aiutarlo. I medici hanno trovato il proverbiale ago in un pagliaio ipotizzando che fosse una malattia genetica, decidendo di sequenziare il DNA del paziente ed identificando in pochissimo tempo il gene responsabile della malattia (che era effettivamente ignota)... un miracolo? Se qualcuno ci crede... comunque un grande progresso per la scienza ed una prima dimostrazione dell'importanza della sequenza del DNA nell'identificazione e diagnosi delle malattie (e nella prevenzione, verrebbe da dire, ma questo apre la porta ad interminabili discussioni etiche e non...) Bello anche il commento (leggibile qui) da parte del team medico all'articolo scientifico apparso su Genetics in Medicine e l'articolo su Forbes.
Beautiful article on Milwaukee Sentinel which earned a Pulitzer price to the authors; the story of a 6 years old child that, since he was 2, lived more in a hospital than outside, had more than 100 surgical procedures and ate solid food very few times. Victim of an unknown desease, there was no treatment that was giving any benefit. The doctors were able to find a needle in a haystack, making the hypothesis that the status could be due to a genetic desease, deciding to sequence the patient's DNA and identifying in a very short time frame the gene responsible for the desease (which was, by the way, still unknown)... a miracle? If you want... however a great progress for science and the first demonstration of the importance of DNA sequencing in desease identification and diagnosis (and prevention, I'd like to add, but this could open the door to endless both ethical and non-ethical discussions...)
