Il "Gran Kilo", un cilindro di platino e iridio che rappresenta il prototipo dell'unità di massa, conservato al Bureau International de Poids et Mesures in una stanza blindata, con temperatura, pressione ed umidità costanti, e sotto tre campane di vetro, sta dimagrendo. Negli ultimi 100 anni ha perso ben 50 µg (ovvero 50 milionesimi di grammo...).
Per questo motivo, e siccome altre quattro unità base sono definite con riferimento al chilogrammo, si sta valutando di sostituirlo con uno standard più preciso...
The "Grand Kilo", a cilinder made of platinum-iridium representing the prototype of the base unit of mass, kept at the International Bureau for Weights and Measures in a vault, with constant temperature, pressure and humidity, and under three bell jars, is loosing weight. In the last 100 years it lost 50 µg (50 millionth of a gram...).
Due to this, and as four other base units are defined relative to the kilogram, there is a proposal to replace it with a more precise standard...
